1111 Saulnier Renovation
Houston, Texas, completed February 2001

Renovated front of building

The renovation of 1111 Saulnier, a circa 1910 two story boarding house is the first phase of a larger community renovation project which includes six shot gun duplex structures, two smaller bungalows and the development of ten new affordable houses, all of which are centered around the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church.
The goal of the Phase 1 building program was to provide housing and community opportunities for eight elderly persons, who were living on a fixed and minimal budget, in the two story frame structure adjacent to the church building. The renovation of the structure was an historic restoration in consultation with the Texas Historic Commission.
The renovation work maintained the scale and character of the original but required new windows, exterior siding, roofing, interior finishes and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
The renovated facility includes eight single units with private bathrooms, two communal kitchens, and two living rooms. The communal areas which are located on each floor provide space for social interaction , television viewing and shared meals.
